In this workshop, students will make pochoir prints, a stencil technique to make imagery and to build up layers of color. Pochoir was popular in the 1920s and 30s as a colour illustration technique for books and magazines. Students will make their own stencils then apply the color with simple brushes and sponges.

The 3-D sculpture that will be made during this workshop perfectly reflects the many facets of an artist’s book. The keepsake features a miniature book-like object fixed to a flexible, interactive mechanism. The techniques taught during the workshop include aspects of basic hand-bookbinding, such as making a case and sewing pages to the case, as well as interactivity feature.

In this workshop, printmaker Phoebe Todd-Parrish will introduce you to the project by showing some historical examples of bookplates and walk you through the process of designing a unique bookplate for you, transferring the design to soft linoleum, carving, and printing your bookplates on paper that can then be adhered to any book in your library!

Japanese Stab bindings have an exposed spine with sewn binding patterns ranging from simple to intricate. The combination of a flush text block and patterned sewing makes for a strong, long-lasting binding. In this workshop, we will make two books with two different sewing patterns.
