Attend this workshop to make an adorable artist’s book that will remind you of your visit to HIW Print Expo & Fair 2025!
Artist’s books can be challenging to define. Found in a variety of formats – they can be actual books, they can be book-like, or they can have an aspect that is book-ish. An artist’s book may or may not be made from conventional materials, but it may also have interactive and movable features that offer the element of surprise. Regardless of the format of the feature, the varied definitions arrive at the same conclusion: the work resulting objects are works of art that can be thought-provoking or purely whimsical.
The 3-D sculpture that will be made during this workshop perfectly reflects the many facets of an artist’s book. The keepsake features a miniature book-like object fixed to a flexible, interactive mechanism. The techniques taught during the workshop include aspects of basic hand-bookbinding, such as making a case and sewing pages to the case, as well as providing the opportunity to learn a technique frequently used by paper engineers that will add unexpected movement to the piece. The result is a delightful artist book, meant to be kept or shared!
Join Barbara Helander, the instructor, who will guide you through the making of this playful book sculpture.
