Wood & Sharwoods Manufactory Columbian Iron Press - London
Age: ca 1840, Serial No. N/A, Platen size: 20.5" x 26" Royal
Following the expiry of George Clymer's patents in mid 19th century, many foundries and factories started making Columbian presses in many variants - both in Great Britain as well as continental Europe.
One of the London based foundries was Wood & Sharwoods who manufactured the Columbians from a workshop on Aldersgate Street. Instead of putting their name on the presses, Wood & Sharwoods chose to engrave on the brass plaque "Invented by the late George Clymer - Manufactory 120 Aldersgate St. London". The reason for such decision by Wood & Sharwoods has been questioned by many historians - was it done out respect for the inventor and his legacy, or was it simply done to give an impression, although false, of continuity of the original Clymer products.
The serial number of our press has not been able to be determined at this time.
