J.B. Hammond, an American, invented the first proportional spacing typewriter with interchangeable characters in the 1884, After his death, F. Hepburn Co. continued the manufacturing of the Hammond typewriters. In 1933, Ralph C. Coxhead took over, and marketed the product as Coxhead Composing Machine, under the name Varityper. When Coxhead died, the company was acquired by the Addressograph-Multigraph, manufacturer of duplicators. Varitypers were produced until 1978.
Anecdotally, Varityper's most glorious moment came in 1945, when one of them typed the Instrument of Surrender which was signed by the Japanese on the battleship Missouri.
