Description:

This is a phototypesetting machine made by H. Berthold AG. In the mid-20th century, a revolution occurred in prepress where typesetters no longer had to put text in lead, but instead enter it in phototypesetting machines like this to be printed on light-sensitive film. Cold type had many advantages over metal type, such as not needing as much storage for heavy type, and the wider range of fonts and graphics. Devices like this were eventually outgrown when word processing on computers prevailed.

Berthold, established in 1858, was one of the largest type foundries in the world, as they were successful in transitioning from metal type to cold type.
