Description:
Robert O. Vandercook was the inventor of the rigid-bed cylinder proof press in 1909. His invention continued to be produced until 1976 and was much loved by artists and designers. Vandercook & Sons was incorporated in 1918 in Chicago, IL.
In 1937, they bought Hacker Manufacturing Co., a competitor, who also made proof presses and type high gauges. Vandercook stopped the production of the presses by Hacker, but allowed them to continue to make gauges, and even sold the Hacker gauges on Vandercook catalogs until 1950.
