Description:
This Richards & Co. Ruling Machine was made for wood engraving. The system produces a field of evenly spaced lines according to the pattern chosen. The block is placed on the bed which moves front to back, and the engraving tool glides over the block creating a cut line, lift the tool, move the bed one increment, then repeat the whole process as many times as needed. The bed can be set at an increment as minute as 1/260th of an inch, and the depth of cut is also adjustable. After Richards’ death, John Royle & Sons, Paterson, NJ, acquired the patents, and started making them under Royle-Richards Ruling Machine in the early 1890s.
