Samuel W. Lowe patented his unique press, with a conical cylinder, in 1856. Made to be transportable & affordable, Lowe’s ads claimed their presses were used by soldiers on Civil War battlefields, also by druggists, businessmen, printers & amateurs. “Every man his own printer!” was the slogan.
